I really enjoyed this one. I think I like your bitchin about stuff...very amusing to me. And I LOVE porn without the filth! Sold!
I strongly feel the need to watch The Flash Gordon movie again. Haven't seen it in ages but I loved it when I was a kid. It's funny, I always think of it as a seventies flick.
I was sad that the new Flash Gordon was awful. Of coarse the 70's version on body snatchers was the best. The 70's were the best era ever for horror films!
macguffin-i like bitchin too, it's fun!!
porn without filth is just plain wrong homey.
the flash gordon of the 80's is still the same campy fun flick you remember.
anonymous-it's hard to find words to describe how bad flash gordon was....
you are right that the 70's was indeed the best era for horror films. the hammer films especially. i think the early 80's is a close second. films like "the thing" and "the fly" among others were classics. i think by the "scream" and "i know what you did last summer" era, horror movies took a bad hit. i may do an upcoming podcast/rant about the state of horror films. thanks for the idea!
Enjoyed the episode, Bucky. I haven't seen the Flash Gordon series yet. It's too bad the SF Channel has taken a turn for the worse, but I agree. I know their idea is: If we make our own series rather than having to pay for them like they used to do back when they were a new channel, well it would be cheaper for them, and they might could even get some money back due to syndication. But I don't think that's going to happen with some of the trudbombs like Mansquito, and some of their other projects. (Funny story, I lurk on a board and there's a SF producer or something like that who started a posting about the SF Channel asking for feedback. Granted he got some good feedback on Battlestar, but not much for Mansquito. The best positive criticism was a guy that wrote: well, it was ok to just kick back and drink a few beers to. I thought, shit, if I gotta get drunk to watch this crap, forget it...)
I remember when the Sci-Fi Channel first aired and for the first couple of years they had some neat programming: The Invaders, Time Tunnel, Planet of the Apes, they even showed some early Dr Who (but mostly just the Tom Baker ones, which was a bit sad). I even like stuff like Lost in Space, though I have a limit to them, and some of the original series like Sci-Fi Buzz was cool.
But now, I hardly watch much on there at all except for Dr Who, and I have reservations about the newest Dr at times. So who knows if the SF Channel will be able to continue going in the route it's going. Maybe someone at the network will eventually pull their head out, but hey, it is a part of Hollyweird, so I won't hold my breathe. There are certainly a lot of series they could do if they new how to do them--that's the rub!!! If you're going to take on a project like Flash Gordon, you need to go back to the source material otherwise you alienate the audience that you are trying to ENTICE. That's also a gripe I have about the comics to movies projects. And with Flash Gordon, hey it is all about space ships, farout cities, bad guys, space opera and yes, Ming was a baldheaded Asian dude. Of course, the original Flash appeared in the newspapers first by Alex Raymond--that's the source I would have used as a template for the series. Heck, at least try and attempt something like the old Buck Rogers series, if you can't even get it that close, and their budget just can't go for some CGI for the ships or whatever, or even something similar to the Classic Trek budget--just have a back drop of a scene painted city or whatever, heck I'd say, why waste the time, energy, and effort. I don't think it's going to float with the "typical" SF fan. I could be wrong, but I think the SF fan does like special effects, space ship battles, and so forth or at least a very engaging storyline.
Oh well, time will tell, I guess. I was a big fan of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers too, and the 50's version is still my favorite. A lot of those early 50 SF films, imo, should have been left alone as few remakes due the justice except for a few examples: The Blog, The Thing, and I even enjoyed War of the Worlds too. Well, better run, but enjoy your podding.
Bucky, I wondered if you caught any of the ABC's new Masters of Science Fiction? It comes on Saturday nights around 9pm. Tonight looks like a pretty good episode with Malcom McDowell. They are stories that are taken from SF short stories.
I check out Dr Who last night, and later just a bit of *ahem* Flash Gordon. Brother, what a crock. They basically took the name, and character's names and invented their own story--I hate that. And a timehole? Uh, wasn't that done on...uh, Stargate?
I thought of a new series for them called Tarzan of the Apes. Basically now, Tarzan is a LA lawyer. He was raised by the Apes, a very wealthy & established family, and he investigaes crimes in the city. Jane is his secretary.
Here's another one: Star Wars--now a reality show set in a city not to far away. Hanny Solo is a bounty hunteress for hire. She and her family of mutant white trash, Chewintabacco & Snoop Skywalker, seek out crimanals that have jumped bail.
Hey, this Hollywood stuff is pretty easy...
